The Metropole cocktail originates from the hotel of the same name, that used to be situated just off Time Square. The Hotel Metropole was a rather seedy establishment with a very eclectic mix of clientele. The drink is somewhat dark and moody and a touch dry and dates from around the 1800s.

It is often made in big batches and served in jugs to share. Rum is often the preferred alcohol in a punch, although they can also be non-alcholic and made with gin and vodka.
