A Tom and Jerry is a traditional cocktail that is served at Christmas in the United States. It is said to have been created by British journalist Pierce Egan, in the 1820s. Similar to an eggnog, it uses fresh egg white and egg yolk, along with Cognac and rum. It is served hot, traditionally in a mug or a bowl.

Ingredients

  • 30ml Cognac
  • 30ml dark rum
  • 1 fresh egg white
  • 1 fresh egg yolk
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • Hot water
  • Freshly grated nutmeg - to serve

How to make

  1. Beat the egg white until stiff
  2. Mix the egg yolk with the sugar and beat until pale
  3. Fold the egg yolk and egg white together
  4. Stir in the Cognac and the rum and pour into a glass
  5. Top up with hot water, not boiling, and stir
  6. Serve topped with some freshly grated nutmeg

The Rob Roy is a cocktail created in New York City in 1894 by a bartender at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan. The drink was named in honour of the premiere of Rob Roy, an operetta by Reginald De Koven. Made with Scotch Whisky the Rob Roy can be made sweet, dry, or perfect. The standard Rob Roy is the sweet version, made with sweet vermouth, ‘dry’ is made with dry vermouth and a ‘perfect’ is made with equal parts sweet and dry vermouth.
